How wonderful to talk on a\u00a0leadership dilemma with people from all over the world! During our leadership webinar, last Monday, we had the privilege of welcoming participants from amongst others Austria, The Netherlands, Switzerland, the United States\u00a0and Australia. Together, we exchanged\u00a0knowledge and experiences, and answered the question: ‘Can you, as a leader, be friends with the people in your team?’ In this article\u00a0we gladly share the most\u00a0striking discussion points and outcomes, as well as the recording and the handout.<\/h3>\n

It became clear from the discussion during the webinar that the answer to the question \u2018Can you, as a leader, be friends with the people in your team?\u2019 is not\u00a0clear-cut. That’s because\u00a0it depends. On various elements, such as personal expectations, cultural differences and external factors.<\/p>\n

All considered, the answer is both \u2018yes\u2019 and \u2018no\u2019.<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n

No, because it is very hard for people to think, act and do as both leader and friend. Knowing when to be the one, and when to be the other. And even if the two of you can do this perfectly, there are other colleagues involved, which may not be able to.<\/p>\n

Yes, because the positive effects are numerous<\/a>, and likely outweigh the negative ones. If you as a leader can handle this dilemma, and other people\u2019s opinions of your way of dealing with it, we recommend you go for it!<\/p>\n

Here is a 3-step roadmap, to\u00a0help you succeed:<\/h3>\n

Step 1:<\/h4>\n

Make clear that in a leader\/friend relationship you will always be professional, and that that you will fire your friend, if needed.<\/p>\n

Step 2:<\/h4>\n

Clearly distinguish where you are coming from\u00a0–\u00a0personal of professional –\u00a0to everybody involved in every professional situation.<\/p>\n

Step 3:<\/h4>\n

Accept that things can change on a personal level; no matter how hard you try. And even if the personal relationship ends, your professional one should remain in tact.<\/p>\n
