If your immediate answer isn&#8217;t &#8216;no&#8217;, chances are you are. Perfectionism is a common theme during our coaching sessions. Wanting to deliver above and beyond good results. Preferably anytime, any place, at any cost. Both at work and at home. Did you know that it&#8217;s not smart at all to be perfect? Actually, striving for perfect results, goes at the expense of everything, and no one is better off. Not the results, not your annual assessment and certainly not you, as a person. Fortunately, there are\u00a0some things you can\u00a0do about it!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tal Ben-Shahar, author of\u00a0amongst others\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Pursuit-Perfect-Chasing-Perfection-Happier-ebook\/dp\/B001NLL2U2\/ref=sr_1_2\" target=\"_blank\">The Pursuit of Perfect<\/a>, distinguishes two types of perfectionism. The first kind is healthy, the second downright harmful. Perfectionists reject reality, and hold impossible standards for themselves.\u00a0They try to meet these continuously, are blind to small triumphs and thus make success unreachable. This results in pain, suffering and mental illnesses.\u00a0Perfectionism is a major cause of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/health\/how-you-can-once-and-for-all-deal-with-stress\/\">stress symptoms<\/a>, and makes you unhappy. Low self-esteem, eating and panic disorders, depression, chronic fatigue, burnout and alcoholism occur\u00a0regularly\u00a0among those who strive for absolute perfection,\u00a0knows self-proclaimed &#8216;recovering perfectionist&#8217; Ben-Shahar.<\/p>\n<p>People from the healthy, realistic kind the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/methods-and-tools\/positive-psychology\/\">Positive Psychology<\/a> Professor at Harvard University calls optimalists. You&#8217;re always somewhere in between. Often times it varies from situation to situation which type you are. In certain areas and at certain times you will be more perfectionistic and at others more optimalistic.\u00a0(For example, you find that you can not just drop stitch at work, whereas you are very tolerant to yourself when you are exercising your hobby.) Do\u00a0you generally try to make the most of it when\u00a0something goes wrong\u00a0(optimalist) or do you oftentimes think\u00a0about\u00a0what an idiot you really are\u00a0(perfectionist)? Do you catch yourself doing the latter? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/people\/are-you-friendly-enough-for-yourself\/\">Don&#8217;t scold yourself<\/a>, but give yourself\u00a0permission to be human instead:<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><ul style=\"--awb-size:17px;--awb-line-height:28.9px;--awb-icon-width:28.9px;--awb-icon-height:28.9px;--awb-icon-margin:11.9px;--awb-content-margin:40.8px;--awb-circlecolor:#2D8A2C;--awb-circle-yes-font-size:14.96px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-1 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\">\n<li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon awb-icon-check\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Realise that you are a human being, and that human beings\u00a0make mistakes.<\/div><\/li>\n<li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon awb-icon-check\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Realise that people learn more from mistakes than from perfect successes.<\/div><\/li>\n<li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon awb-icon-check\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Accept that people have emotions. Permit yourself to feel negative ones. Experience what it does to you when you realise that what you did, could (or should) have been done better.<\/div><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p>One way to do this, is\u00a0by means of guided meditation exercises, like this one by Tal Ben-Shahar.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/137817823?color=FDBE38\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><p>When this is done, it is time for the next step: transforming from being\u00a0a fault finder (someone who makes a habit of detecting faults and criticising) into a benefit finder: focussing on what is going well, and how that could be further improved.<\/p>\n<h3>You can do that with these exercises:<\/h3>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><ul style=\"--awb-size:17px;--awb-line-height:28.9px;--awb-icon-width:28.9px;--awb-icon-height:28.9px;--awb-icon-margin:11.9px;--awb-content-margin:40.8px;--awb-circlecolor:#2D8A2C;--awb-circle-yes-font-size:14.96px;\" class=\"fusion-checklist fusion-checklist-2 fusion-checklist-default type-icons\">\n<li class=\"fusion-li-item\" style=\"\"><span class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon awb-icon-check\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\">Grab a pen and paper and write down what the biggest challenge is that you stand for right now. Also good to know, is how important it is to ask for help.\u00a0At a time when you have not yet put so much time and energy into your work, that you are no longer open to suggestions. Perfectionists do not ask for help that easily, though. Why that is the case?\u00a0That would mean that you would have to admit that you can not do it all by yourself, and therefore are not perfect. However, once you do ask for help, the benefits are enormous. You discover that you are not alone. That others are in the same boat and would be happy\u00a0to lend a hand. And that by using each other&#8217;s knowledge, skills and ideas, you get much\u00a0faster and better results.<\/p>\n<h2>Scoring with your manager<\/h2>\n<p>Contrary to what perfectionists think: your manager doesn&#8217;t want perfect results. On the contrary, wasting time and money earns you no good appraisal interviews at all. As one of the first executives\u00a0Nathalie worked for said: &#8216;A 7\u00a0or 8\u00a0score is fine. A 10 takes too long and is too expensive.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Another reason why perfectionism probably doesn&#8217;t make you popular with your boss, is that striving for\u00a0perfection is often confused with a lack of team spirit, stubbornness and laziness.\u00a0In fact, perfectionists are the boulders in exhibiting procrastination. However, for a different reason than many executives and close colleagues suggest. Not because they are lazy, but because they are trying to protect themselves. If you do not start doing something, you can not make mistakes, and can not receive negative feedback, is what they think. The result is often the opposite: the attempted protection ends in a bad review or dismissal.<\/p>\n<p>In short:\u00a0perfectionism is not perfect, nor smart. It blocks the happiness in your life and work, and thus both your personal development and your career.\u00a0So get the most out of life and become an optimalist!
