That\u2019s a shame! Positive change and learning new habits that are important to you, in whatever direction you would like to, can make sure that you will become a lot happier in the coming year! In this blog I &#8211; expert by experience and psychologist &#8211; will share my best tips!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why only 17 percent of all resolutions succeed<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like approximately 80 percent of all\u00a0Dutch, I always make New Year&#8217;s resolutions by the end of the year: eat healthier, exercise more and take more time for the things that are important to me. Usually after a few weeks of slogging they have vanished completely. According to a\u00a0yearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ing.nl\/nieuws\/nieuws_en_persberichten\/2015\/12\/nederlanders_massaal_aan_goede_voornemens_voor_2016.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ING<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> survey I am not the only one who fails to succeed. This survey shows that only 17 percent of the people who make resolutions are able to accomplish the results they are looking for. Social Psychologist Roos Vonk suggests that this is because we set <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roosvonk.nl\/maar-nu-echt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unrealistic goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for ourselves. Next to that, many people don\u2019t realize what obstacles they must overcome to achieve their goals, Vonk says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps this low pass rate evokes the idea to you that it is almost impossible to change your behavior. Luckily, this is not the case! Because just like you and me shaped our behavior and habits in our (yet) younger years, therefore we are also able to change it now. And, unfortunately perhaps, the statement: &#8216;I am too old for that&#8217;, is a lame excuse. In fact, you are able to adjust\u00a0your behavior and skills until the day you blow out your last breath. You only need to acknowledge what is holding you back and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/you-right-place-five-steps-personal-change-strategy-lindegaard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to make a change, says Harvard Psychology lecturer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/people\/learn-to-fail-or-fail-to-learn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tal Ben-Sahar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Age doesn&#8217;t matter: behavior and habits can always be changed<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Okay, but how?\u2019, you may be wondering now. Through the hard way, by reading about it and by trial and error I finally succeed last year! I eat healthier, I exercise three times a week and take more time for the things I find important now. Things I know that make me happy. Like spending time with the ones I love and care\u00a0for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willingly, I grant you the happiness to achieve your happiness goals as well. With these tips I gladly give you the opportunity to increase your chances of successful New Year&#8217;s resolutions in the coming year. Believe me, it is less hard than you think. Sometimes with some (minor) adjustments and a little perseverance, keeping up your resolutions, and thereby becoming even more happy, is actually a(n) (easy to resist) \u2018piece of cake\u2019. \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Focus on your strengths<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus setting and making your resolutions based on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/people\/the-ideal-new-years-present-happiness-as-a-gift\/\">strengths<\/a>. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amybucherphd.com\/finding-your-strengths-feeding-your-competence\/\">Martin Seligman<\/a>, one of the founders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/methods-and-tools\/positive-psychology\/\">Positive Psychology<\/a>, you are able to create your own happiness by focussing your resolutions on what you do best, instead of what needs to be improved. Isn&#8217;t that\u00a0wonderful?\u00a0It all begins with gaining insight in your strengths, which you can do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/special-programs\/happy-2017\/\">here<\/a>!<\/span><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Stay realistic<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/home.ubalt.edu\/tmitch\/642\/Articles%20syllabus\/Locke%20et%20al%20New%20dir%20goal%20setting%2006.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">realistic and concrete<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0New Year&#8217;s resolutions, it makes little sense to impose yourself to exercise every day if you know that this is not feasible in combination with your work beforehand. With a achievable resolution, for example exercising two times a week, you will increase your\u00a0chances to succeed!<\/span><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Take it step by step<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure that you do not want to change everything\u00a0all in once. By spreading your resolutions over time, you are less likely to experience a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seniorennet.be\/Magazine\/artikel\/70\/4x-meer-wilskracht-zo-houd-je-goede-voornemens-vol-en-weersta-je-verleidingen\">decrease in willpower<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and to give in to temptations. <\/span><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Get enough sleep<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get enough sleep (&gt; 6 hours). <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms3259\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep deprivation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disturbs the functioning of the brain regions responsible for controlling your desires. Sleeping enough can help to ensure that you easily say no to yet another drink or cookie. <\/span><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:10px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Ask for help<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And last, but not least: <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.power2improve.com\/en\/people\/happiness\/why-it-is-not-smart-to-be-perfect-perfectionism-power2improve\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ask for help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!
